Tokyo Taxi Fares Explained
Taxi fares in Tokyo start with a base fare of 500 yen for the first approximately 1.1 kilometers. After this initial distance, an additional 100 yen is charged for every 255 meters traveled beyond the base distance.
If traffic slows or the taxi moves under 10 km/h, a time-based charge applies. For instance, 100 yen is added for every 1 minute 35 seconds spent at this slower speed. This can increase fares during congestion.
From 10 PM to 5 AM, a 20% late-night surcharge is added on top of the standard fare. For example, a base fare of 500 yen becomes 600 yen during these hours. Highway tolls are added separately.
A taxi ride from central Tokyo to Haneda Airport has a flat fare starting around 6,900 yen, while to Narita Airport it starts at about 19,000 yen. These fees include distance, time, and any toll charges.
