Sydney Taxi Fares Explained

In Sydney, taxi fares are regulated by the NSW government and must not exceed maximum rates. The standard hire charge is five Australian dollars, charged once when the trip starts. After that, a distance rate applies depending on time and distance travelled.

For trips within the first twelve kilometres, the distance rate is approximately two dollars and fifty-two cents per kilometre during the day. Beyond twelve kilometres, this rate decreases to about two dollars and twenty-nine cents per kilometre. At night, rates are slightly higher.

Night-time trips between 10 pm and 6 am include a higher distance rate of three dollars per kilometre for the first twelve kilometres. Additionally, there is a peak time surcharge of two dollars and fifty-six cents applicable on weekends and public holiday eves.

Waiting time during slow traffic or stops is charged per minute at approximately one dollar and nine cents. Extra fees may apply such as tolls between four and eight dollars, a cleaning fee up to one hundred twenty dollars, and surcharges for non-cash payments up to five percent.

For example, a ten-kilometre trip at daytime costs five dollars hire charge plus ten times two dollars fifty-two, totalling about thirty dollars and twenty cents, excluding tolls or waiting time.
