Phuket Taxi Fares Explained

Taxi fares in Phuket are generally calculated using a metered system regulated by the government. The initial base fare starts at about 50 Thai Baht for the first two kilometers. After that, the fare increases per kilometer traveled, with a rate of approximately 12 Baht per km for the next 15 km.

The fare structure also includes a per-minute charge for waiting time, typically charged at around 3 Baht per minute while stuck in traffic or waiting. For airport trips, there is an additional flat surcharge of 100 Baht added to the total fare.

For example, a taxi ride from Phuket Airport to Patong Beach, approximately 32 km, would cost around 700 to 800 Baht. This includes the base fare, distance charges, waiting time if any, and the airport surcharge. Called taxis may add a further 50 Baht fee.

About Taxis in Phuket 🚕

In Phuket, you can get taxis easily at places like the airport, shopping centers, or just on the street. Official taxis are usually red and yellow with a taxi sign on top, making them easy to spot. You can also use ride-hailing apps like Grab to book rides from your phone.

Many taxis seat up to 4 passengers, but there are also minivans for bigger groups. Paying usually happens in cash, so keep some Thai Baht with you. Some drivers may accept mobile payments if you use app-based services.

For safety, always make sure the taxi uses the meter to avoid being overcharged. Confirm your destination with the driver and take note of the license plate and taxi number. Avoid unofficial taxis that do not have government licenses.

Taxis in Phuket are available 24 hours a day, especially near busy areas. However, during busy times like holidays, you may need to wait longer, so plan accordingly and book in advance if possible.

The main taxi companies include a mix of metered local taxis and services linked to ride-hailing apps like Grab. These apps provide price estimates and allow you to pay by card or mobile wallet.

Taxis and minivans are popular ways to move around Phuket for visitors and locals. They are convenient for reaching different parts of the island safely and comfortably, offering an easy way to explore Phuket’s beaches and towns.
